c. Third Quarter of the Nineteenth Century; This polished black classically shaped water jar with four bear paw designs is a stunning example of pottery at its time. Stylistic evaluation and age show it to be the work of Filomena Cajete Gutierrez, who was the grandmother of the celebrated potter Margaret Tafoya. Her mother Sara Fina, who in turn was taught by her mother, Filomena, instructed Margaret in the traditional ways
