Griffing was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania. He attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and went on to a thirty-five year career in illustration before moving on to fine art. He paints Native Americans of the Great Lakes and Eastern Woodlands. The historical accuracy of his art earned him the John Forbes Medal awarded by the Fort Pitt Association and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. He exhibits annually at the Masters of the American West Exhibition at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, California. This painting is illustrated in Robert Griffing's second book, "The Narrative Art of Robert Griffing". Paramount Press, 2007, pp. 64-65, and was made into a giclee canvas print by Paramount Press.
