In "The Art of Tom Lovell: An Invitation to History", the oil painting version of Walking Coyote and the Buffalo Orphans is illustrated accompanied by a description prepared by the author Walt Reed who collaborated with Lovell in the production of the book. The source of the picture comes from an Indian story about a Montana Indian, Walking Coyote, who brought back from the plains, eight buffalo to Flathead Valley. Their progeny flourished in the protected valley and became the nucleus of the herd that exists today in the area designated as the National Bison Range. Walking Coyote is remembered as the one who saved the buffalo.
