Little Wolf Defies the U.S. Army exhibited at the Prix de West, National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, catalogue No. 116, June 1995 and illustrated in the show catalogue on page 90.

In September 1878 a band of Northern Cheyennes fled their confinement and ill treatment on a reservation in Oklahoma in an effort to regain their homeland in Wyoming. Two hundred seventy eight souls, less than half adults, were under the leadership of Little Wolf and Dull Knife. They literally fought northward beset by the enormous resources of the U.S. Army. On one occasion, Little Wolf exposed himself to rifle fire to give his people courage an survived. But their heroic efforts were in vain and most of these valiant Cheyennes were annihilated before reaching their home, writing one more page in what has been described as a century of dishonor. - Tom Lovell
