Mikel's style depicts an honesty that is true to the people and places he portrays. His friendships with working cowboys and involvement in the horse industry (he and his wife Christie, raise quarter horses) gives him inspiration and a unique perspective to his art. He works in colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic and oils. Mikel has works in private collections nationwide and participates in many shows through out the year. Recently he received the “Jurors Choice Award” and “Second Place Overall” at the The American Royal Western Art Show & Sale in Kansas City. In 2008 he again received "Best of Show" (second time in three years) at the World Championship Ranch Rodeo Art Show in Amarillo,Texas. In 2009 he is participating in: “Trappings of Texas”, Alpine, TX; “2009 Roundup Show” at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas; The Nita Stewart Haley Memorial Library “Annual Invitational Show” in Midland, Texas;“ One Man Show - The Art of Horse Ra c i n g”, at Remington Park, Oklahoma City, OK; “ Greeley Independence Stampede Western Invitational Art Exhibit and Sale”, Greeley, CO; “American Western Art Classics Show”, Altermann Galleries, Santa Fe, NM; “America’s Horse in Art” at the AQHA Museum in Amarillo, Texas; “ Buffalo Bill Western Art Show”, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, W Y; “ Mountain Oyster Club Show” in Tucson, Arizona and the “Collectors Classic Sale” at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas. He has been featured in American Cowboy, America's Horse, The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal and Western Horseman magazines.
