Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1475-1519) is best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World. On September, 29, Balboa waded into the water, climbed upon a rock, raised his hands, his sword in one and the flag of Spain in the other, and claimed possession of the new sea and all the adjoining lands in the name of Christ and the Spanish sovereigns.
