Born in the Philippines in a community of artists, Romel de la Torre as a young boy would go to the studios of artists to watch them paint. In the late 70's Romel and his family moved to the United States where he began going to museums watching and learning on his own, works of famous artists like Sargent, Sorolla, Fechin, Mucha, and the American Impressionists. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he studied Life Drawing and Painting. After graduating with a fine arts concentration, Romel continued to paint in the Chicago area and joined The Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, where he began painting with artist Richard Schmid and a community of other painters. It was a turning point of de la Torre's creative and artistic career. His subjects are figures, landscape, portraits, and still lifes, which he paints with a focus on light, color, and form. The artist currently instructs advanced painting and portraiture at The Palette and Chisel Academy on Fine Arts and at Main Street Art Center. He is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America; his oils, pastels, watercolors, and portraits are housed in private collections throughout the United States and several foreign countries. His most recent awards includes; 2003 Progress Energy Florida Invitational (Best of Show), 2003 Oil Painters of America (Award of Excellence), and 2003 Bosque National Art Competition (Gold Medal for Best Oil, Gold Medal for Best Drawing, and the Conservatory Art Patrons Purchase Award).
