Four Bears Mato'-to'pe in Mandan, was a major Mandan chief who was painted several times by artists George Catlin & Karl Bodmer. Four Bears told Catlin of the fight depicted in this painting. When a Mandan war party came upon a much larger Cheyenne war party, the Mandans were inclined to flee. Four Bears berated them for cowardice & drove his lance into the ground, indicating he would stay & fight alone. A Cheyenne chief on a beautiful white horse admired Four Bears bravery & drove his land into the ground & challenged Four Bears to a man-to-man fight, gladiator style. Four Bears killed the Cheyenne. Catlin verified the account from other Mandans.
