A portrait and marine painter, Arthur Hammond was born in Vernon, Connecticut and as a youngster, lived in various parts of the country including Denver and California. At an early age, he began building small boats, which eventually led to his primary subject matter as a painter. He studied art for six years with Eric Pape in Boston and in the studio of marine artist Charles Woodbury. He often traveled West to paint in Monterey, California, and these trips included stops in New Mexico and Arizona. He spent several years in Europe including along the Cornish Coast and in Paris where he studied at the Academy Julian. His subject matter also included winter scenes of New Hampshire. Source
