Sandra Harris (b. 1954)  Artworks >>

Sandra Faulstich Harris has been recording the beauty of those around her nearly all her life. Born in the small farming community of Algona, Iowa in 1954, her rural roots are apparent in the warm compassion that illuminates her portraiture. Although she has had no formal training, her desire to paint was kindled early, and she began painting commissioned portraits in oil at the tender age of 14. She made Woodland Park, Colorado her home in 1975 where she still resides with her husband, Shane, and their two sons. It is here that she has met and painted many of her favorite subjects. Her own traces of Indian heritage sparked an early interest in these people, and yearly visits to her friends at the Crow Indian Reservation provide additional research for her sensitive portrayals of the Crow children. Sandra's dramatic use of light has become a trademark of her work, having been influenced somewhat by the work of the Italian painter, Caravaggio. Recently she has studied under Howard Terpning, Bob Wygant, Jessica Zemsky and Jack Hines, all of who have been influences in her work. She was also selected to study with a group of ten CA artists for a special session at the Cowboy Artists of America Museum in Kerrville, Texas. She works in both oil and acrylic, and her work can be found in important collections across the country. She continues to accept portrait commissions, most recently completing the official portrait of Coach Ben Martin for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Sandra believes that her desire to paint is a God-given one, and strives to capture in every painting her love and compassion for people. It's this commitment of portraying the human spirit on canvas that inspires her to make painting her life's work. Source
