William Ravencroft Sharles (b. 1940)  Artworks >>

Known for his colorful and ornate wildlife pieces, William Sharles is drawn to the dramatic and unusual. He strives to create pieces that will make a viewer stop in their tracks and study what is going on in his work. Named Official Wildlife Sculptor for the American Endangered Species Foundation in 1995, Sharles focuses on creating works with themes involving endangered species, the environment, and evolution in an attempt to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our planet. Sharles was strongly influenced as an child by his grandmother with whom he traveled around the world for eight years. An art collector and former antique dealer, she exposed her grandson to the artwork of not only Europe, but the Orient as well. It was this early influence that laid the ground work for what would become his signature style; still pulling inspiration from these travels today, one can see the evidence of European and Oriental influence is still very much a part of his current works.
