The images of Iroquois Guide II and Algonquin Chief and Warrior were initially created as sculptural studies for a mural painting commissioned by the Mellon family to be placed in the Ft. Pitt Museum, Pittsburgh, PA. This was a technique that one of Jackson’s teachers, Thomas Hart Benton, had utilized in creating his murals. Jackson’s mural was a narrative of the French and Indian war. Source: Frank Getlein, Harry Jackson Monograph – Catalogue, Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York, 1969.
