Focused on the West of the 1800s, McCarthy tackled Native American and Cavalry subjects, placing the dynamic figures in landscapes renowned for precisionist, almost surreal landscape elements such as rocks and grasses. He was a member of the Cowboy Artists of America from 1975 to 1998. In 1984 he was the subject of a retrospective at the Gilcrease Museum, Tusla, OK.
