Porfirio Salinas is one of Texas’ most recognized artists. Born in Bastrop, Texas he principally painted the Hill Country around San Antonio. President Lyndon Baines Johnson and Governor John Connally collected his works and both played a significant role in bringing national attention to Salinas’s art. The present offering was created in the 1940’s.
Provenance:
Senator Carlos Ashley Jr., San Saba & Land County, Texas. Descent within the family to the present owner.
Senator Carlos Ashley, Jr. (1904-1993). Ashley was from a pioneer Hill Country family. He served as State Senator for ten years, and as District Attorney of the 33rd district. He was also on the Texas Christian University board of trustees for forty years. Ashley sought to record the speech patterns and customs of the people of the Hill Country. In 1949 he was named Poet Laureate of Texas.
