The present offering comes from the collection of Bob Eagle, long time friend and collector of the artist’s work. According to Eagle, the artist declared Old Town as his finest creation. This statement is corroborated by well-known collector Jerry Freeman who was a close friend of both Eagle and Hulings. The location of Old Town is Cerrillos, New Mexico (population 229 in the 2000 census) near Santa Fe along the Turquoise Trail. Hulings traveled throughout the world in search for the right subject matter. He did not create works to suit the market, instead chose subject matter that suited his personal need for artistic expression, whether it be a Paris flower market, an exquisite still life, or in this instance, a small town with ordinary people that time had passed by. Hulings was acclaimed for this ability to capture on canvas the brilliant sunlight of northern New Mexico.
Provenance: Robert M. (Bob) Eagle estate
