According to Russell authority Rick Stewart, the artist told some of his closest friends that he was very proud of having worked on the open range before it was fenced in and plowed under by the settlers.
“I was neither a good roper nor rider. I was a night wrangler. How good I was, I’ll leave for the people I worked for to say--there are still a few of them living.”
As Russell grew older, he became more nostalgic and in 1924 created the model of The Horse Wrangler.
Nancy Russell was in charge of CMR’s castings and paid great attention to detail. She would select the foundry and maintain quality control. The present casting was made between 1929 and 1935. Rick Stewart has defined lifetime casting as being until Nancy Russell’s death in 1940.
