Inscribed: 'C.M. Russell (artist's cipher), Roman Bronze Works, Inc. N-Y," base (the wooden base is not attached and was made by present owner)

In 1949, the copyright and original model for Smokin’ Up was sold to Walter Latendorf of the Mannados Bookshop, NYC. Following Latendorf’s death in 1957, Helen Card, his assistant, took over the business and continued to cast Smokin’ Up. According to Russell authority Fred Renner, Ms. Card asked Roman Bronze in the 1960’s to return the original model to her. Rick Stewart, in Charles M. Russell: Sculptor, states that, “after that time, it can be assumed that no additional castings were made from the model.”
