During the second half of the 19th century, Albert Bierstadt was recognized as the most famous & financially successful landscape painter of the American West. His dramatic & tranquil depictions of Rockies & Sierra Nevada Mountains introduced the western frontier to viewers throughout the world. He rapidly became a celebrity on two continents. As the 20th century approached, interest in Bierstadt's art declined as the subject matter & style was out of favor. For decades there was little interest in his paintings; however, in the second half of the 20th century his art regained popularity & is presently in great demand & is considered, once again, one of the preeminent painters of the American West.
