Signed: "R. Brownell McGrew", l/r

McGrew was one of the first artists to seriously research & document the life-ways & ceremonials of mid-20th Century Navajo & Hopi peoples. During the three decades from 1959 to 1989, he traveled extensively into remote areas in Arizona & New Mexico building familiar relationship with both the young & the elderly.
Navajo Roundup is a major undertaking by bringing together numerous elements to create a well-composed work capturing for all time an important annual event in the life of the Navajo. McGrew personally knew all the Native Americans that appeared in the painting & would interject them in other works he would create over three decades.
