From 1845 – 1886 many of the Apache were at war with the United States. The Southwest was a cauldron of hostilities and peace was in many instances short lived. General Miles put over 5,000 soldiers in the field to capture Geronimo. Geronimo surrendered in 1886 with his “army” of 20 warriors and 13 women & children. Shown here in this painting are 3 Apache warriors utilizing the harsh terrain and their familiarity with it, to conceal themselves from a relentless pursuing cavalry. © Steven Lang OPAM
