In Festival Balloons – San Francisco 1911, the artist’s narrative speaks to the blending of cultures in America. The children are celebrating July 4th (take note of the USA flag on the balloon) in the same fashion as other children throughout the nation; with the exception of Native Americans, all Americans are of immigrant stock. The models used in creating Festival Balloons were neighborhood children in southern California. Born in southern China, Mian Situ earned BA and MFA degrees from the Guangzhou Institute of Fine Art and then worked as an art instructor for six years. He lived in Canada for ten years before immigrating to the United States in 1998.
