With a career spanning nearly five decades, Glenna Goodacre has become well known for her bronze sculptures, specializing in sensitive portraits of children in action. Goodacre’s career spans almost five decades. Considered by many to be “America’s Sculptor,” she was born in Texas. Although she was more interested in painting early on, she now has an international reputation for her large-scale bronze figurative sculptures.
Following her growing desire to sculpt, rather than paint, Goodacre studied sculpting and graduated from Colorado College. She then continued her studies at the Art Students League in New York, but in 1983, moved back west, making her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Today, her works are widely exhibited and displayed in public, national, international, municipal, corporate and private collections in more than forty countries. This includes Sidewalk Society, a group of nine larger-than-life bronzes of people in transit, installed in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Her popularity comes from her ability to accurately express the nuances of the human form in bronze. Goodacre’s work captures an essence of humanity that reaches out, and draws the in the viewer. “People can walk up and touch it,” she says of her work. “They want to look in the eyes. They want to think about it or smile.” However, Goodacre also commemorates significant people or events in bronze. On November 11th, 1993, Veteran’s Day, her Vietnam Women’s Memorial was unveiled. Located on the National Mall in Washington D.C., this sculpture, in both its design and breadth, honors and pays tribute to the eleven thousand American women who served in the military during the Vietnam War. Goodacre’s memorials also include The Irish Famine Memorial, a speaking testimony to the historical link between Ireland and the United States.
Goodacre has won numerous awards from the National Sculpture Society and Allied Artists of America as well as the Gold Medal from the National Academy of Design. In 1993, she was awarded the Knickerkbocker Artists’ Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement in American Art. The Gilcrease Museum in Texas has held a retrospective of her work. Goodacre is a member of the National Academy of Design and the National Sculpture Society.
